Three Tools Every Website Needs to Work Smarter

Building and launching your company website is only the beginning. It must be equipped with a few powerful tools behind the scenes to make it truly effective. These tools help you track how visitors interact with your site, manage marketing tags efficiently, and protect your forms from spam and abuse. What tools are we talking about? Every website should have three essentials: Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics 4, and Google reCAPTCHA.

If you already have accounts for these tools but are unsure where to find the codes your programmer needs, the following will walk you through each step. Don’t worry, if you don’t have Google accounts yet, follow one of the links in each section below, and sign up before you begin.

Step-by-step instructions to retrieve the codes/IDs needed for:

  • Google Tag Manager
  • Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
  • Google reCAPTCHA

1.) Google Tag Manager (GTM)

Steps to get your Google Tag Manager container code:

  1. Go to https://tagmanager.google.com
  2. Sign in with the Google account used to set up Tag Manager.
  3. Once logged in, you’ll see a list of accounts/containers.
  4. Click on the correct account name and container for your website.
  5. Look in the top-right corner – you’ll see something like GTM-XXXXXXX (e.g., GTM-ABC1234). – This is your Container ID.

To get the full code snippet:

  1. In the left sidebar, click Admin (bottom left).
  2. Under Container, click Install Google Tag Manager.
  3. You’ll see two code snippets:
    1. One goes in the <head> of your site.
    2. One goes right after the <body> tag starts.

Copy both snippets and send them to your programmer.

2.) Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Steps to find your GA4 Measurement ID:

  1. Go to https://analytics.google.com
  2. Log in with the same Google account used to set up Analytics.
  3. Choose the correct property (your website name).
  4. In the left-hand menu, click Admin (bottom left).
  5. Under the Property column, click Data Streams.
  6. Click on your Web data stream (it should show your website URL).
  7. On the next page, look for the Measurement ID at the top right – it looks like: G-XXXXXXXXXX (e.g., G-1ABC234DEF).

Copy this ID and send it to your programmer.

Optional: If your programmer also wants the Analytics script, scroll down to “Tagging Instructions” and choose “Install manually” to see the script.

3.) Google reCAPTCHA (usually v2 or v3)

Steps to find your reCAPTCHA Site Key and Secret Key:

  1. Go to https://www.google.com/recaptcha/admin
  2. Log in with the Google account used to register your site.
  3. You’ll see a list of your registered sites.
  4. Click on the correct label (usually your website name or domain).
  5. On the next page, you will see:
    1. Site Key – this is public and used in your website’s frontend.
    2. Secret Key – this is private and used on the backend.

Copy both keys and send them to your programmer.

Setting up these tools ensures your website performs reliably, provides valuable data, and remains protected from unwanted activity. Locating and sharing these codes with your programmer enables your website to operate more efficiently, track meaningful user behavior, and safeguard essential interactions.

One last note: Since late 2024, Google has been slowly migrating many of its standalone tools and services into its broader Google Cloud platform – https://cloud.google.com/. This shift is supposed to bring greater integration, centralized management, and enhanced security across all Google products. By consolidating these tools under Google Cloud, users can benefit from more scalable infrastructure, advanced data capabilities, and seamless connections with other cloud-based services – all designed to support more efficient and intelligent digital operations.
